Gloucestershire side Hartpury started fifth in the Second Division table and led their hosts 14-0 after tries from Ethan Hunt and Aristot Benz-Salomon, who scored shortly before the incident involving Thomas.
A statement from Ampthill said: “Our thoughts are with Alex for a speedy recovery. We understand that the decision is disappointing for the fans who traveled to watch the match, but our priority is the health of the players and match officials.
The club, eighth in the Championship, confirmed the match would be rearranged in due course and all original tickets would be valid for the rematch. Championship Rugby has yet to comment on Saturday’s withdrawal.
